Independence Celebration Walk and Picnic sponsored by the Diocese of Des Moines

6th Avenue & High Street to the east lawn of the Capitol

The Walk and Picnic are part of a national “Fortnight for Freedom” from June 21 through July 4, an opportunity to “emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty.” As Americans and believers, our church continues to express serious concerns with the current HHS mandate which restricts religious liberty. This walk and picnic will both celebrate our long-standing religious freedom and raise awareness of the current threat to its future.

PSALM OF THE DAY

Today is the day to say: The Lord will remember his covenant for ever.

Psalm 111 is a hymn of thanksgiving for all God has done for us.

This is not an internal prayer; but rather a proclamation to all those around us!

We’re reminded by the faith of the psalmist that God will forever be with us.

Today is the day to say: The Lord will remember his covenant for ever.

GOSPEL

Mk 10:17-27

As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him,
“Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments:
You shall not kill; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; you shall not defraud; honor your father and your mother.” He replied and said to him, “Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth.” Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” At that statement, his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the Kingdom of God!” The disciples were amazed at his words. So Jesus again said to them in reply, “Children, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God.” They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves, “Then who can be saved?” Jesus looked at them and said, “For men it is impossible, but not for God.
All things are possible for God.”

Venerable Pierre Toussaint

He was internally free long before he was legally free.

Pierre Toussaint was a house slave in Haiti and arrived in the U.S. when his master sent his son to New York to avoid political unrest.

Apprenticed to a local hairdresser, Pierre learned the trade quickly and eventually worked very successfully in the homes of rich women in New York City.

When his master died, Pierre was determined to support his master’s widow, himself and the other house slaves. He was freed shortly before the widow’s death in 1807.

Pierre donated to various charities, generously assisting blacks and whites in need. He and his wife opened their home to orphans and educated them.

Venerable Pierre Toussaint… pray for us that we reflect God’s generous love to all those around us.

1150 KWKY CATHOLIC RADIO PRAYER

Lord Jesus, You commanded your followers to go out and preach the Gospel to all creation. Your servant Blessed Pope John Paul II proclaimed that “radio offers perhaps the closest equivalent today of what Jesus was able to do with large groups through His preaching.”

We ask your guidance for the ministry of 1150 KWKY Catholic Radio that we may affectively and consistently convey your message to Iowa as well as the Diocese of Des Moines and remain faithful to the teachings and values of the Catholic Church. Empower the 1150 KWKY Catholic radio staff to walk with you and to labor beside you in their efforts.

Inspire all listeners today through the grace of your Holy Spirit to understand more fully your desire for them and through the ministry of Catholic radio, touch their hearts and change their lives. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
