Independence Celebration Walk and Picnic sponsored by the Diocese of Des Moines
6th Avenue & High Street to the east lawn of the Capitol
The Walk and Picnic are part of a national “Fortnight for Freedom” from June 21 through July 4, an opportunity to “emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty.” As Americans and believers, our church continues to express serious concerns with the current HHS mandate which restricts religious liberty. This walk and picnic will both celebrate our long-standing religious freedom and raise awareness of the current threat to its future.

PSALM OF THE DAY
Today is the Day to Say … In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge
Psalm 90 is generally considered a lament; a plea for God’s help
Yet, today’s response selects the phrasing within that psalm and highlights the eternal refuge for us by trusting in God.
Our human life, however brief, is only a glimpse in comparison to God’s everlasting love.
Today is the day to say: In every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.
GOSPEL
Mk 12:13-17
Some Pharisees and Herodians were sent to Jesus to ensnare him in his speech. They came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion. You do not regard a person’s status but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?” Knowing their hypocrisy he said to them, “Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius to look at.” They brought one to him and he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” They replied to him, “Caesar’s.” So Jesus said to them, “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” They were utterly amazed at him.

St. Boniface
The new evangelization would not be new for today’s saint.
St. Boniface worked as a missionary…not to convert people to Catholicism but rather to correct the flaws within the Church.
In order to restore the German Church to its fidelity to Rome and to convert the pagans, he followed two principles.
The first to restore the obedience of the clergy to their bishops in union with the pope of Rome.
The second was the establishment of many houses of prayer which took the form of Benedictine monasteries.
During his final mission, St. Boniface and 53 companions were massacred while he was preparing converts for Confirmation.
St. Boniface… pray for us that we can be a part of healing our Church.

1150 KWKY CATHOLIC RADIO PRAYER
Lord Jesus, You commanded your followers to go out and preach the Gospel to all creation. Your servant Blessed Pope John Paul II proclaimed that “radio offers perhaps the closest equivalent today of what Jesus was able to do with large groups through His preaching.”
We ask your guidance for the ministry of 1150 KWKY Catholic Radio that we may affectively and consistently convey your message to Iowa as well as the Diocese of Des Moines and remain faithful to the teachings and values of the Catholic Church. Empower the 1150 KWKY Catholic radio staff to walk with you and to labor beside you in their efforts.
Inspire all listeners today through the grace of your Holy Spirit to understand more fully your desire for them and through the ministry of Catholic radio, touch their hearts and change their lives. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
