Sunday, July 1, Noon

Independence Celebration Walk and Picnic sponsored by the Diocese of Des Moines

6th Avenue & High Street to the east lawn of the Capitol

The Walk and Picnic are part of a national “Fortnight for Freedom” from June 21 through July 4, an opportunity to “emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty.” As Americans and believers, our church continues to express serious concerns with the current HHS mandate which restricts religious liberty. This walk and picnic will both celebrate our long-standing religious freedom and raise awareness of the current threat to its future.

PSALM OF THE DAY

Today is the day to say: Teach me your ways, O Lord.

Psalm 25 leads us in prayer; petitioning God to teach us.

When we follow this psalm, we are also following the prayer Jesus’ taught us…. “thy will be done”

We can be confident, as is the psalmist, that God will forgive us and guide us in his humble way…if we only listen.

Today is the day to say: Teach me your ways, O Lord.

GOSPEL

Mk 12:28-34

One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, “Which is the first of all the commandments?”
Jesus replied, “The first is this: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.” The scribe said to him, “Well said, teacher. You are right in saying, He is One and there is no other than he. And to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is worth more than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” And when Jesus saw that he answered with understanding, he said to him, “You are not far from the Kingdom of God.” And no one dared to ask him any more questions.

The blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church.

Servant of God Joseph Perez carried on that tradition.

Fr. Perez ministered in Mexico less than 100 years ago during a time of great civil unrest.

The persecution under their presidency forced Fr. Perez to wear disguises as he traveled to visit Catholics.

He was captured when returning from a secretly held Mass and was stabbed to death by soldiers.

The Catholic Church in Mexico today is much freer than it was in the 1920’s. Catholicism is very much alive nurtured in part by martyrs like Father Perez.

Servant of God Joseph Perez … pray for us that we stand firm in the challenges facing our church today.

1150 KWKY CATHOLIC RADIO PRAYER

Lord Jesus, You commanded your followers to go out and preach the Gospel to all creation. Your servant Blessed Pope John Paul II proclaimed that “radio offers perhaps the closest equivalent today of what Jesus was able to do with large groups through His preaching.”

We ask your guidance for the ministry of 1150 KWKY Catholic Radio that we may affectively and consistently convey your message to Iowa as well as the Diocese of Des Moines and remain faithful to the teachings and values of the Catholic Church. Empower the 1150 KWKY Catholic radio staff to walk with you and to labor beside you in their efforts.

Inspire all listeners today through the grace of your Holy Spirit to understand more fully your desire for them and through the ministry of Catholic radio, touch their hearts and change their lives. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
